7. Midnight Code Switch
Ethan sat in the hospital chair, his mind reeling from Lila's confession. He couldn't believe that she had been capable of such a thing, and he felt a deep sense of betrayal. How could he have been so wrong about her?
Clara sat beside him, her hand on his arm. She was silent, but he could feel the tension in her body. He knew that she was as shocked and hurt as he was.
The room was quiet, except for the beeping of the monitors. Noah was sleeping peacefully, oblivious to the drama that had unfolded. Ethan looked at his son's face, and felt a surge of love and protectiveness. He would do anything to keep him safe.
Suddenly, the door opened, and a nurse entered the room. She looked at Ethan and Clara, and then at Noah.
'Is everything okay?' she asked.
Ethan nodded. 'Yes, everything's fine,' he said.
The nurse smiled. 'Good,' she said. 'I just wanted to check on you. If you need anything, just press the call button.'
Ethan thanked her, and she left the room. He looked at Clara.
'I need to get some air,' he said.
Clara nodded. 'I'll stay here with Noah,' she said.
Ethan stood up and walked out of the room. He headed down the hallway, towards the exit. He needed to clear his head and think about what he was going to do next.
As he walked, he thought about Lila. He had thought that he loved her, but now he realized that he had never really known her at all. She had hidden her true nature from him, and he had been too blind to see it.
He stepped outside, into the cool night air. The hospital was surrounded by a large parking lot, and he walked towards it. He needed to be alone, to think about what had happened and what he was going to do.
He reached the parking lot, and stood there, looking up at the stars. He took a deep breath, and then let it out slowly. He felt a sense of calm wash over him.
He knew that he had to make a decision. He could either forgive Lila and try to move on, or he could end their relationship and cut her out of his life completely. He wasn't sure which option was the right one.
He thought about Noah, and how much he loved him. He knew that he had to do what was best for his son, and that meant making sure that he was safe and happy.
He thought about Clara, and how much she had supported him. He knew that he couldn't let her down, and that he had to be there for her, no matter what.
He took another deep breath, and then made his decision. He would forgive Lila, but he would also make it clear that her behavior was unacceptable. He would tell her that she needed to get help, and that if she ever did anything like this again, he would end their relationship for good.
He felt a sense of relief as he made his decision. He knew that it wasn't going to be easy, but he also knew that it was the right thing to do.
He turned and walked back towards the hospital. He was ready to face Lila, and to tell her how he felt.
When he got back to Noah's room, he found Clara sitting in the chair, looking worried.
'Where have you been?' she asked.
Ethan sat down beside her. 'I just needed some time to think,' he said.
Clara nodded. 'I understand,' she said.
Ethan took her hand. 'I've made a decision,' he said.
Clara looked at him, her eyes filled with questions.
'I'm going to forgive Lila,' he said.
Clara's eyes widened in surprise. 'Are you sure?' she asked.
Ethan nodded. 'I'm sure,' he said. 'I know that it's not going to be easy, but I think it's the right thing to do.'
Clara looked at him for a moment, then nodded. 'If you think it's the best thing,' she said.
Ethan stood up. 'I'm going to go find her,' he said.
Clara stood up too. 'I'll come with you,' she said.
Ethan shook his head. 'No, I need to do this alone,' he said.
Clara looked at him for a moment, then nodded. 'Okay,' she said.
Ethan gave her a quick kiss, then turned and walked out of the room. He headed down the hallway, towards the waiting room.
When he got there, he found Lila sitting alone, looking pale and frightened. She looked up when she saw him, and her eyes filled with tears.
'Ethan,' she said.
Ethan sat down beside her. He looked at her for a moment, then took a deep breath.
'Lila, I want to forgive you,' he said.
Lila's eyes widened in surprise. 'Really?' she asked.
Ethan nodded. 'Really,' he said. 'But I also need to make it clear that what you did was unacceptable. You can't ever do anything like that again.'
Lila nodded. 'I know,' she said. 'I'm so sorry. I don't know what came over me.'
Ethan looked at her for a moment, then reached out and took her hand.
'I know that you're sorry,' he said. 'And I believe that you love Noah. But you need to get help, Lila. You need to talk to someone about what's going on inside your head.'
Lila nodded. 'I will,' she said. 'I'll do anything to make this up to you.'
Ethan looked at her for a moment, then stood up.
'Come on,' he said. 'Let's go back to Noah's room.'
Lila stood up too. She wiped her eyes, and then followed Ethan down the hallway.
When they got back to Noah's room, Clara was sitting in the chair, looking relieved. She stood up when she saw them, and gave Lila a hug.
'I'm glad you're okay,' she said.
Lila hugged her back, then looked at Ethan.
'Thank you,' she said.
Ethan nodded. 'You're welcome,' he said.
He looked at Noah, who was still sleeping peacefully. He felt a sense of relief and gratitude. Despite everything that had happened, they were all still here, together.
'Let's go home,' he said.
Clara and Lila nodded, and they all walked out of the room, towards the elevator.
As they rode down to the lobby, Ethan thought about the future. He knew that there would be challenges ahead, but he also knew that they would face them together, as a family.
When they got outside, the air was cool and fresh. Ethan took a deep breath, and then looked at Clara and Lila.
'Let's go,' he said.
They walked towards the car, and Ethan felt a sense of hope. He knew that they had a long way to go, but he also knew that they would get there, one step at a time.
